About the Artist
Trophy Life
I was raised in the generation of Teddy Ruxspin; my parents couldn’t afford battery operated toys, but I knew he existed.
For the first 100-150 years of our country the American identity was strongly, if not completely defined by the vast and untamed landscape. Western expansion and American transcendentalism painted the American identity with the sublime brushstrokes of a Hudson River School painter. But with the industrialization of our nation came a shift from rural, to urban. As more Americans transitioned into the labor force, the American identity began to evolve from one defined by our relationship with nature, to one defined by our relationship to consumer goods and technology. Trophy Life explores the ambiguous space of our American identity in modern times.
